Century Mile will kick off its meet as the Edmonton, Alta. track hosts its season opener on Friday, Sept. 26.
The program, which begins at 6:15 p.m. (MDT), features a $16,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace with a group of the province’s top distaffs. Starting from post two is Alberta’s 2024 Horse of the Year, Outlawguns N Roses, who won her Alberta Sires Stakes Super Final at Century Mile last November. Nathan Sobey will catch-drive the Captive Audience-Gunslingin Gal mare for trainer Rod Starkewski. Her main rival will be Grey Sea, who comes off two Preferred wins in her last three starts. The Gord Abbott-trained mare will again be teamed by Kelly Hoerdt from the five-hole. Senga Nightmare, a 10-time winner this year, has drawn post four as she rejoins the Preferred ranks after two straight victories in conditioned events for owner/trainer/driver Ryan Grundy. They will contend with Byby Baby Byby (PP1, Mike Hennessy), Bares All (PP3, Logan Gillis) and Beep Bop A Lula (PP6, David Kelly).
Century Mile will hold racing on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as Wednesday, Oct. 1 and New Year’s Eve. The major events at the meet will be the Western Canada Pacing Derby for sophomore colts and geldings and the Century Casinos Filly Pace for three-year-old fillies, both carrying an estimated purse of $110,000. Eliminations will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4 for the finals on Saturday, Oct. 11. The track will also host the remainder of the Alberta Sires Stakes season, with the Super Finals set for Saturday, Nov. 8.
