Piece Of The Rock obliterated the all-age track record at Sudbury Downs with his 1:52 romp on Saturday night in the City Of Greater Sudbury Pace eliminations for the father-son team of Robert and Scott Young
.
Post 2 starter Piece Of The Rock and driver Scott Young took control of the eight-horse field in the first of two $28,200 eliminations and cruised past panels of :26.3, :56 and 1:24.4 before drawing away by seven and a half lengths. The time of the mile shaved four-fifths of a second off the former track standard, held by Part Shark. Rush Rules (Dan Clements) advanced first over to finish second with Deuces And Jacks (Paul MacLean) following his cover to show.
Piece Of The Rock paid $5.40 to win as the favourite. Trainer Bob Young shares ownership of the four-year-old Rocknroll Hanover-Paula Promise gelding with Jamie Trott of Orangeville, Ont., Brian Barton of Carlisle, Ont., and Frank Aloise of Brampton, Ont. The win was his second in 15 outings this year and bumped his seasonal earnings to $69,340 while his lifetime bankroll climbed to $440,347.
Chasin Racin stole the show in the second elimination as he cruised gate-to-wire for a 1:54.3 triumph.
With Mike MacNeill in the bike for trainer Andrew Moore, the five-year-old son of The Panderosa-Contrapan left from the inside post position and led the field past fractions of :27.3, :56.4 and 1:25.3 before holding off pocket-sitter Windsun Callum (Dan Clements) down the stretch for the three-quarter length victory. Casimir Jitterbug (Mario Rivest) followed along in third.
Chasin Racin paid $14.60 for the mild 6-1 upset. The win was his third in a row and fifth in 15 seasonal starts, pushing his earnings to $51,967 for 2011 and $673,316 lifetime. He is owned by Jamie MacKinley of Clyde River, P.E.I., and Jody and Larissa Sanderson of Doha, Qatar.
