Twelve-Year-Old Driver Finishes Second

The PEI Department Of Agriculture Matinee Championship Finals took place at Summerside Raceway Wednesday evening with three divisions, whipless driving and the youngest driver ever to race around the oval

.

Twelve-year-old Ryan DesRoche of O'Leary steered Rivervue Janeen in a textbook drive to finish second behind Trevor Easter with Sammys Luck in the first division, defeating third place Steven Sweet on JK Crusher. “Ryan eats, breathes and dreams horses,” laughed his aunt, “but my knees shake watching him race.” The mile went in 2:04.1.

Second division went to Stracor, owned by Paige and Claudia Sweet and driven by Steven Sweet, in 2:07.1. Runners up were Misty Fog (Stuart Tremere), Rags To Britches (Brandon Darrach), Only A Rose (Clair Sweet), Howmacs Starshark (Sheldon Ford) and NS Empress (Terry Shea).

The third and final was this year's Matinee Championship and the Department Of Agriculture trophy went to Glengyle Cody, owned by Connor and Tanner Sweet and driven by Steven Sweet in 2:12.2. He defeated Windemere Dawn, Jasperfriendlybear, Step On Nanny, Gold And Chances and Sherwood Dexter.
