Top Alberta pacing mare River Lass made her British Columbia debut a winning one with a wire-to-wire romp in the $12,500 Fillies & Mares Open Pace on Friday night at Fraser Downs.
Driver Tim Brown sent the five-year-old As Promised mare to the lead from post four and carved out fractions of :27.2, :57.2 and 1:25 en route to an uncontested three length victory in 1:53 flat. River Lass came within three-fifths of a second of Furious Five's track record for distaffers with her winning effort. Itza Free For All (David McKellar) sat third for most of the mile before angling off the pylons around the final turn to come on for second. Just Fiction (Jim Marino) finished third.
River Lass paid $6.10 to win for the 28th time in her career. Trainer Kelly Hoerdt shares ownership of the $300,000-plus earner with fellow Beaumont, Alberta resident Blair Corbeil.
River Lass is now 12-for-17 on the year with $58,520 earned in purses.
