Icy Blue Scooter chipped away at pacesetter Retros Mystery's lead during Century Mile's $9,000 Open Handicap to deliver on his Friday night pari-mutuel promise.
Retros Mystery (David Kelly) established the lead into the first turn and carved out fractions of :28.1, :57.4 and 1:25.3. Meanwhile, odds-on favourite Icy Blue Scooter threatened first-over and eventually wore down the pacesetter late for the 1:53 victory. Third prize went to Sabine Pass (Paul Davies), who had edged out Icy Blue Scooter in the Open five days ago.
Trainer/driver Nathan Sobey co-owns the six-year-old Blue Burner gelding with Edmonton's Diane Bertrand and Robert Gilhespy. Icy Blue Scooter has won half of his 22 starts this year with eight other on-the-board finishes and $54,101 in purses.
The 23-time career winner was claimed by his current owners for $20,000 last October at
Northlands Park.
