After last racing in mid-August, 2016 Battle of Waterloo champ Sports Column returned the racetrack on Friday morning at Mohawk Racetrack in advance of what could be the colt's only Grand Circuit test.

In rein to Chris Christoforou, Sports Column allowed Deo Galileo (Doug McNair) to set the tempo through moderate early fractions (:29.3, :59.2) before taking control on the backstretch. A sharp :56.2 back half gave Sports Column the 1:56.1 score, a length and a half better than Deo Galileo.

Owned by trainer Blake MacIntosh along with Hutt Racing Stable and Daniel Plouffe, Sports Column boasts a 4-2-0 in six starts with $222,000. While the connections have stated that the colt will primarily be focused on Ontario Sires Stakes competition this year, the one Grand Circuit option is the Champlain Stakes. That race is scheduled for next Saturday (September 10) at Mohawk where he's likely to face some of the colts competing in the 2016 Metro Pace.
