A new wood carving created by local artist Levi Cannon will be installed this week at the Charlottetown Driving Park as part of the city’s beautification efforts.
The carving pays tribute to the many harness racing drivers who competed over the years at the Charlottetown Driving Park and Red Shores Racetrack and Casino, and recognizes Parkdale’s involvement in the sport of harness racing.
“Horse racing is a part of our rich heritage, and visiting the racetrack is a long-standing tradition for many local families and Island visitors,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee, chair of the City’s Urban Beautification and Sustainability Committee.
“One of our City’s most successful events is the Gold Cup and Saucer race. With this latest carving, we are recognizing the organizers, volunteers and harness racers who continue to make that event such a success. We’re also recognizing the great racers who have passed through the Charlottetown Driving Park since it opened in 1889.”
Carvings created for the City by Levi Cannon include a poppy display in front of the Royal Canadian Legion on Pownal Street, a Robin Hood statue located at the corner of St. Peters Road and the Bypass, and a WWI airplane at the corner of Beach Grove Road and North River Road.
The newest wood carving will be located on Exhibition Drive.
