Odds-on favourite Cereal Killer put forth a decisive performance to take the $10,148 Manitoba Standardbred Sires and Breeders Association Futurity Final on Saturday (Sept. 18) at Marquis Downs.
Trainer-driver Marc Fillion fired the Toucam Sam gelding to the front with Jim Strikesitrich settling into second and Jimmydiddonegood several lengths back in third. Past the quarter in :29.4, Cereal Killer strolled from there to a 1:01.4 half and by three-quarters in 1:31.2 before drawing clear from Jim Strikesitrich to win by 3-1/4 lengths in 2:01.2. Jimmydiddonegood checked in third many lengths behind.
Bred and co-owned by Fillion with Wanda Howlett, Cereal Killer won his fourth race from 11 starts, pushing his earnings to $13,630. He paid $2.20 to win.
Racing capped on Saturday with a $2,700 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace, won by Outlaw Tootsieroll going away in 1:57.3. The six-year-old Smart Shark mare raced third as even-money choice Hurry Home set a clip of :28.3 and :57. Driver Lee Ibey then sent the Lance Ward trainee after the front to three-quarters in 1:26.3, took over control and strolled away to a four-length victory. Pure Addition closed to take second with Northfield Nellie finishing third.
Owned by Jamie Ward, Outlaw Tootsieroll won her third race from 11 starts this season and her 14th from 78 overall, pushing her earnings to $54,467. She paid $6.60 to win.
