The Garth Schurman Memorial Pace headlines a 12-dash Sunday afternoon (September 18) at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

First race post time is 1 p.m. and the Schurman Memorial is set for race 10 with McMaverick the morning line favourite in the $1,600 class for trainer/driver/owner Keith Campbell of Tyne Valley, P.E.I. The nine-year-old son of Western Maverick was a 1:57.3 winner last month at the Prince County oval, but will have some stiff competition with veteran pacers Bowyer Hanover (Gary Chappell) and Painted Desert (Jason Hughes).

Born in 1949, Garth Schurman was a long-time participant in Western P.E.I. racing with top pacers like Meg and Ten Spot, as well as top class trot mare Bus Stop, who he won 10 races with in 1971. Schurman passed away in 2013, but leaves son Rocky Schurman, who is an active trainer and driver.

The Sunday afternoon top class lines up in race 11 with Doing Some Damage favoured off the rail in the $2,100 event for driver Brian MacPhee, trainer Trevor Hicken and owner Kent Livingston of Cornwall, P.E.I. The seven-year-old son of Cole Muffler is consistently pacing in 1:55-1:56 on Island tracks and faces off with a field of five rivals in this week’s contest. Jeb has post three with Hughes in the bike for owners Robi Hughes and Eric and Blair MacLauchlan, all of Stratford, P.E.I., while Motorino has post five for trainer/driver Terry Gallant fresh off a 1:57.1 victory in Summerside. Other entries include Rash B Havior (Marc Campbell), Dbs Rosco (Kenny Arsenault) and Machinthesand (Norris Rogers).
