Regarding the possibility that Fraser Downs could become a training facility for Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts has gone on the record as saying, "at this point in time, all I can say is we're in discussions."

The news comes via a report on cloverdalereporter.com, which states that "it is not yet clear whether the track, casino or rodeo would still be part of the Fraser Downs facility."

In regard to whether the province's horse racing industry will merge its live thoroughbred and standardbred cards at Hastings Park, which has been heavily speculated in the past weeks, Kevin Falcon, the Liberal MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale, was quoted as saying, "I'll let the experts figure that out, but I want to make sure any decision that's made supports a strong, bright future for the horse racing sector."

The report also states that the province has $17 million in available funds to create the soccer training facility, which is also said to be able to act as a training centre for international soccer.

There is nothing bleaker than an empty soccer field. To turn such a valuable property into a playing field is madness. There are hundreds of empty acres less than half a mile away south of the bridge on highway 17.This would be an April fool joke if it wasn't September
