After having been sent postward as the public’s 2-1 second choice, the Joseph Poirier-trained and Andrew MacLean-driven Unstoppable Speed ($7.40) proved that he was more than worthy of the backing for Sunday’s (Sept. 16) $1,100 Winners-Over Pace at Inverness Raceway.
After having been dispatched from Post 1, the 11-year-old Benvolio Hanover gelding shot straight to the point, cut all the fractions (:29.4, :59.2, 1:29.1), and came home with a :29.2 final panel to post a two and a quarter-length victory in 1:58.3.
Sent postward as the longest shot on the board (11-1), Dreamfair Van Dam raced mid-pack through the fractions and came on to finish second. Makes Me Stupid, who raced second-over throughout the mile, rounded out the top three after finishing more than four lengths back of the victor.
Unstoppable Speed notched the sixth victory of his 22-race campaign. He has now won 43 of his 186 lifetime starts and banked over $64,000. Unstoppable Speed is owned by Madison Poirier and Susan Miller of Inverness, Nova Scotia.
The win was one of two training victories during the card for Poirier, who also steered his pupil Prada Spur ($5.60) to a win in Race 1. Ryan Campbell and Redmond Doucet recorded driving doubles during the card.
