Woodbine Mohawk Park hosted a compact six-race qualifying session on Tuesday morning (Sept. 15), as a relatively small collective of Standardbreds put in some work over the seven-eighths-mile course in Campbellville, Ont.
Determination's Port Perry, who finished just a head back in second in his Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final last fall, was one of the more notable names to fill the morning docket. Pilot Bob McClure had the Luc Blais trainee out and hustling from Post 9 in Race 5. The duo made the front early, sliced the fractions (:28.1, :58, 1:28.2) and finished things off with a :28.4 final frame. The son of Kadabra held on for a half-length win and stopped the clock in 1:57.1.
Sportswriter two-year-old Dubai Seelster also proved to be another gate-to-wire victor during the session, as he captured Race 6 on the engine. After having lined up in Post 6, reinsman Doug McNair left with the colt, dictated the tempo (:29.1, :59.1, 1:28.3), and came home in :28.1. The win time was 1:56.4 and the margin of victory was five lengths. Gregg McNair trains Dubai Seelster for James Fraleigh of Dresden, Ont.
The Chris Hayes-trained and Jody Jamieson-driven Need Arocket was the fastest winner of the morning, as the three-year-old Warrawee Needy gelding turned a pocket trip into a head victory in 1:53.2. Need Arocket is owned by Harvey Hayes of Norwich, Ont.
