The majority of the public’s money found its way to the nose of Crazy Wow in Friday’s $34,000 Preferred Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, but Major Athens stole that trotter’s thunder with his come-from-behind score in the featured affair.
Major Athens, in rein to Jody Jamieson, got away fourth from Post 4 while race favourite Crazy Wow shot to the top from Post 9 and hammered out panels of :27, :56 and 1:24.4. Shuffled to sixth at the three-quarter pole, Major Athens waited patiently for room in the lane and when he found it he sprinted home in :27.4 to win by a half-length margin over Lookslikeachpndale in 1:53.2. Crazy Wow faded to finish third.
Let go as the third choice in the wagering, Major Athens picked up his fifth win of the 2017 campaign for trainer Jeff Gillis and owner Howard Taylor of Philadelphia, PA. The 27-time winner has banked $786,185 to date.
Multiple winning tickets were purchased on Friday’s Jackpot Hi 5 wager at Mohawk Racetrack, and as a result more than $600,000 will be carried over to the wager on Saturday evening.
Friday’s winning combination of 6-7-2-1-8 returned $10,815.70 for every $1 ticket.
