When people hear of the term ‘double duty’ in horse racing they usually think of a horse breeding and racing. Chocolate Delight is doing a different type of double duty, and he is excelling at both.
An article which appears on nj.com has told the story of the four-year-old gelding that splits his time between the racetrack and the show ring.
The report states that just days after winning a September 1 conditioned race at Freehold Raceway, the brown son of Chocolatier competed in several classes at the National Standardbred Show at the Horse Park of New Jersey.
Oyvind Hegdal trains Chocolate Delight for his racing career, while the trainer’s daughter, Victoria, 13, rides the $44,601 career earner in the show ring.
The article has cited Victoria as saying that riding has made Chocolate Delight a better racehorse and has made him stronger in the hind end.
Last fall, Chocolate Delight won the $27,000 New Jersey Futurity for New Jersey-sired three-year-old trotters courtesy of a strong, three-wide closing move.
