Ten of the sport’s most talented two-year-old pacing fillies sparred in a set of Shes A Great Lady eliminations Saturday at Woodbine Mohawk Park, with Alicorn and Lyons Sentinel winning their $35,000 assignments.
Alicorn went to the front and didn’t look back in her elimination for driver Louis Philippe Roy, who watched the Chantal Mitchell trainee halt the teletimer in 1:50.3.
Leaving from Post 4, Alicorn hustled to the lead and sliced out panels of :26.4, :55.3 and 1:23.2 before sprinting home in :27.1 to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Somebeachsometime. Also picking up cheques – and advancing to next week’s final – were Betalady, Alexa Skye and Peaky Sneaky.
The daughter of Bettors Delight-Mythical improved her rookie record to 5-2-0 from eight tries while pushing her earnings to $234,389 with the victory. She is owned by Windermere Stable LLC of New York and Robert Muscara of Pennsylvania.
Lyons Sentinel matched the track and Canadian record for two-year-old pacing fillies when she toured the oval in 1:50.1 for driver Tim Tetrick and trainer Jim King, Jr. The performance equalled the standard set by I Luv The Nitelife in 2012 and then equalled by JK Shesalady in 2014.
JK First Lady shot to the early lead and had the field chasing her to the quarter pole in :28.3. Heavily favoured Reflect With Me popped the pocket going into the backstretch, and she had no problem clearing to the front. She led the group to the half in :56 and the three-quarter pole in 1:23.1. Lyons Sentinel, who sat fourth most of the mile, sprinted first-over around the final and then used a :26.3 closing quarter to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Reflect With Me. Also advancing to next week’s final are JK First Lady, Off The Press and Saulsbrook Raven.
The daughter of Captaintreacherous-Tutu Hanover now owns a 5-3-0 record from eight trips to the track, and she’s banked $292,330 along the way for Threelyonsracing of Innerkip, Ont.
