For the first time in almost 50 years harness racing was conducted during the Western Fair in a mini three-day meet designed to introduce fair patrons to the sport
.
“Today’s card went really well,” said Raceway Manager Ian Fleming. “The handle will be what we expected but that’s not what this was about, it was trying to get people from the fair to wonder over to check out the racing and that’s what happened.”
To make things a bit more interesting, race announcer Frank Salive called the races from in front of the grandstand so the newcomers could actually watch while he announced the races. In between races he interviewed people in the stands.
The mini meet will continue for the next two days with a post time at 6:30. Horse people are reminded to use the stable gate for free admission. Those racing Tuesday or Wednesday are also encouraged to come early and enjoy the fair and all of its fun and diverse attractions.
