Tragically Shipp overcame his assigned outside post position and earned his second straight victory in the Racing Under Saddle (RUS) Ontario series on Saturday night at Hiawatha Horse Park.
Tragically Shipp took the lead past the half-mile mark in the $3,000 RUS Handicap Trot and began to draw away from his seven foes. Hidden Identity sprinted home to try and reel in the leader, but came up three-quarters of a length short as Tragically Shipp hit the wire first in 2:02. Ale Ale Jandro finished seven and a half lengths behind in third.
Coming into the race off a RUS victory on Aug. 29 at Georgian Downs, Tragically Shipp was the 1-2 favourite and paid $3.00 to win.
Donning the familiar orange and yellow colours of her late mentor Frank MacDonald, rider Natalie Elliott earned her fifth under saddle win in nine starts this season.
Lee Watson trains Tragically Shipp, a nine-year-old Shipps Speed gelding owned and bred by Lynne and David Magee of Wingham, Ont. The trotter now boasts a perfect two-for-two record racing under saddle this year.
The next RUS Ontario event is scheduled for Sept. 26 at Mohawk Racetrack.
