San Pail, Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2011, continued to gear up for his seasonal pari-mutuel debut during Mohawk Racetrack’s qualifying session on Wednesday at the Campbellville oval.
With Randy Waples in the racebike, San Pail lined up in Post 5 for Race 5, which featured a field of seven.
Waples gave the nine-year-old a conservative start, as he worked him into the four-hole and watched Vimy Ridge (driven by Scott Zeron) carve the opening quarter in :28.2, the half in 58 seconds and the three quarters in 1:27.2.
San Pail was first-up along the final turn and utilized a :28.2 final quarter to reel in the tempo setter. The gelded son of San Pellegrino won by two and a half lengths in 1:56.2 over the ‘fast’ track.
