Maritimer To Elm Grove Mistress

After a runner-up effort to Tobins Terror in Atlantic Sires Stakes action last week, Elm Grove Mistress ($7.20) was able to exact revenge in the $17,780 Maritimer for three-year-old pacing fillies on Saturday (Sept. 1) at Exhibition Park Raceway.

Tobins Terror, sent off the 6-5 public choice, was aggressively handled by Gary Chappell from the start, working clear from post 5 through a :28.2 first quarter before slamming on the brakes on the second turn. Sitting last in the field of five, Elm Grove Mistress and trainer-driver Marc Campbell began their first-over ascent nearing the completion of the half in 1:00.

The filly of Articulator gained steadily up the far side and took second from the pocket-sitting Woodmere Wyldstyle (Todd Trites) nearing three-quarters in 1:29.3 before continuing on to duel Tobins Terror off the home turn. Elm Grove Mistress got the better of her rival, winning by half a length in 1:59.2. Woodmere Wyldstyle maintained third from the pocket.

Now a four-time winner, Elm Grove Mistress, a daughter of Articulator, races for owners Larry and Kathy Chappell.

In the sub-featured $5,000 Jim Doherty Memorial, Ramblinglily withstood a stout middle-half challenge from Father Ofthe Year before edging 3-1/2 lengths clear to a 1:57.2 victory, the 62nd of her career and her sixth of the season in 15 tries. Todd Trites drove the eight-year-old Articulator mare for trainer Allan Jones, who shares ownership with Normand Leger.
