Carrera Angel, under the command of owner-driver Rocky Schurman converted a pocket ride into a winning score when they claimed the Labour Day pace in a dazzling 1:57.2 Monday at Red Shores Summerside.
Leaving from Post 5, Schurman placed the nine-year-old gelding behind Capitalism (Jason Hughes) and stalked the leader through splits of :28.3, :59.1, 1:27.4 before Carrera Angel powered by the favourite in the stretch for the victory. Keystone Nobility (Corey MacPherson) was third.
Jason Hughes had a big day at the office with four winners on the 13-dash program. The Stratford native opened the afternoon with three-year-old filly Woodmere Trulyblue from the Blaine McKenna stable and then paraded Brianna Angel and Casimir Lucuano to victory lane. Hughes completed the grand-slam with Beckenbauer in 1:58.2.
Song Dream captured the trot feature defeating Scarlet Patti by a neck in 2:04. Brian MacPhee did the driving for owner Mark Ramsey, Greenwood, NS and trainer Vaughn Doyle, Charlottetown.
The fastest mile of the day went to Just A Professor in line to Ken Murphy in 1:56.4. Murphy, who had a driving double, was booked to drive by owners Creston Gillis and Michael and John Clarey.
