A training triple for Richard Moreau on Saturday (August 6) at Woodbine Mohawk Park gives the veteran conditioner a bit more cushion atop a close race in the track's leading trainer standings.
Heading into Saturday's card of harness racing, Moreau had sent out 111 winners at Mohawk over the 2022 calendar year. That was just two more than Carmen Auciello's 109. After Saturday's card, that margin widened to four.
Moreau picked up three tallies on the 12-dash card, connecting with Cadillac Bayama ($5.00, Doug McNair) in the fifth race, then going back-to-back with driver Sylvain Filion in the ninth and 10th contests courtesy American History ($20.40) and Julerica ($3.10).
Auciello did tally one victory to lift his local win total to 110, four shy of Moreau this year at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.
After all was said and done for the reigning Canadian trainer of the year on Saturday night, Moreau's 185 seasonal wins and $2.68 million in purses lead the nation by a comfortable margin. The Puslinch, Ont. resident sports 6,567 wins in his career — third best in harness racing history — with horses earnings $68.4 million in purses.
