Monkey On My Wheel Gets Gold Trophy

Despite drawing the outside Post 8 in the $130,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final for three-year-old pacing fillies at Rideau Carleton Raceway, elimination winner Monkey On My Wheel wired her foes to earn yet another stakes trophy on Sunday

After winning the Canadian Breeders Championship at Mohawk Racetrack in July, Monkey On My Wheel headed to Ottawa to contest her third Gold Series event of the season, which she swept to earn her first OSS wins this year.

Rick Zeron fired the Mach Three-Legislation miss to command and led the way past fractions of :27.1, :56.1 and 1:23.4 en route to victory in 1:52.2. Modern Connection (Mark MacDonald) finished over three lengths behind in second with the other elimination winner, Athenas Legacy (Mario Baillargeon), rounding out the top three.

Monkey On My Wheel paid $4.10 to win as the bettor's choice. Trainer Travis Umphrey co-owns the bay filly with Mac Nichol of Burlington, Ont. The win was her fourth (consecutive) in 10 starts this year and boosted her seasonal earnings to $238,725. The career winner of $453,725 now sports a record reading 7-7-1 in 19 lifetime starts.

Sunday's card also featured two-year-old pacing fillies in action as they faced off in one $40,000 OSS Gold elimination.

Driven by Mario Baillargeon, Classy Lane Rose sat third along the rail for most of the mile before shooting up the rail to score a 19-1 upset over pacesetter Mindsweeper (Sylvain Filion) and pocket-sitter Ys Gold Star (Denis St. Pierre). Classy Lane Rose used a :28-second final frame to get up for the 1:54.3 career-best victory by a quarter length.

Classy Lane Rose returned $40.90 for the upset. The daughter of Jeremes Jet-Titanic Rose, who recently won her Battle Of Belles elimination before finishing fourth in the final, is owned by trainer Ben Wallace of Milton, Ont. and James Millier of Puslinch, Ont. Prior to the 'Belles' she finished second in her Gold eliminiation and third in the final at Mohawk and kicked off her career with a runner-up performance at the Grassroots level. Tonight's victory pushed her career earnings to $75,600.

The top nine finishers in the elimination will advance to next week's $130,000 OSS Gold Final while favourite Apogee Hanover (Rick Zeron), who made an early break and finished a distanced 10th, is listed as an also eligible.
