I Wanted Wings, who was set to compete in the $783,042 Hambletonian Oaks this Saturday at the Meadowlands Racetrack, has been scratched after sustaining a possible career-ending infection
.
“She had an injection in her right front ankle and it got infected,” co-owner Eric Cherry of the Let It Ride Stables told harnessracing.com. “She’ll probably be okay to breed, but I don’t think she’ll be able to race again.”
I Wanted Wings has put together a record reading 4-4-3 in 21 starts with earnings totaling $403,418 for Cherry, the Robert Cooper Stables of Boca Raton, Florida and Jerry Silva of Long Beach, New York.
“I bought Southwind Tempo thinking she would not be able to come back to the races and we would just breed her, but instead she is having a great season. And I Wanted Wings, who is a homebred that we were looking forward to racing in all the big races, will probably be a broodmare now.”
Southwind Tempo earned double millionaire status with her Golden Girls victory last Saturday at the Meadowlands.
