W C Kenzie Cookie Takes Vernon Feature

P.E.I.-bred W C Kenzie Cookie, driven by Justin Huckabone, charged late to win the featured $6,000 fillies and mares pace at Vernon Downs on Friday (August 6).

Jericho Diva (Steeven Genois) led to the first quarter in :26.1 and half-mile in :54.3 before Jackies Express (Leon Bailey) came first-up to challenge as they went around the far turn. Jericho Diva was first to three-quarters in 1:23.2.

As the field made the turn for home, the race became wide open. Lady Limelight (Chris Long) took a short lead as they reached the stretch, however, W C Kenzie Cookie ($30.80) came flying down the stretch and was followed by second-place finisher So Diva (Kerin Warner). W C Kenzie Cookie had the jump and the win in a lifetime best clocking of 1:53. Dojea Gigi (Brad Irvine) finished third.

W C Kenzie Cookie is a seven-year-old mare by Camshaft Hanover, bred by William Folland of O'Leary, P.E.I. She is owned by Michael Sergi and trainer Sam Sergi. The win was her fourth this season and she now has 21 career victories.

Justin Huckabone drove three winners on the card. He got his other wins with Siros Blue Chip ($27.80) and Sheer Talent ($7.30).

Leon Bailey leads all drivers this season with 67 wins. Justin Huckabone is second on the list with 36 victories. Chris Long is third with 29 trips to the winner’s circle. Jimmy Whittemore (26) and John MacDonald (21) round out the top five.

Jeff Sorenson leads all trainers with 18 wins. Bruce Lauer is second with 15 wins. Jessica Okusko (14), Justin Huckabone (13) and Gary Gibson (12) round out the top five.

Vernon Downs will host its next live harness racing card on Saturday (August 7) with 10 races. Post time is 6:10 p.m.
