A particular Standardbred achieved quite the notable feat on Monday (August 5), as he went out and recorded the 100th win of his career.
The crowd at the Western Michigan Fair in Ludington, Mich. witnessed history in the fourth race on Monday, as 14-year old gelding T Red paced his way into the history books by notching his 100th career win.
The 14-year-old son of Cams Eclipse – bred by Mark Matthews of Jerome, Mich., and owned and trained by Henry Gulley of Cement City, Mich. – has been chasing his 100th career win on Michigan’s summer fair circuit.
“I was getting nervous we weren’t going to get there, and I am really happy he got the win in Michigan,” said Gulley.
Kathy Clemons joined Gulley in the winner's circle.
“She was there for his first win and now she is here for his 100th,” continued Gulley.
“It gives you chills being a part of Win 100,” said regular driver Ryan Ver Hage. “The crowd really cheered us on at the half, and it was just an awesome feeling when we crossed the wire.”
“I am thankful to Henry for the opportunity to drive a horse like ‘Red.’”
Gulley purchased T Red in 2008, and all 460 of the chestnut gelding's starts have been under Gulley's care. After having not raced as a two-year-old, T Red took his lifetime mark of 1.51.1 as a five-year-old at Indiana Downs. Overall, T Red has amassed $469,103 in earnings — all while having never raced for a purse larger than $25,000.
The Michigan war horse will continue to race through the end of the season, according to Gulley.
