After just missing on Sunday, Modern Best ($3.90) took advantage of a ground-saving trip to make it back to the winner's enclosure in Wednesday's (Aug. 5) $1,250 featured pace at Inverness Raceway.
Modern Best got away fourth in the field of five in an early post lineup to the first turn which saw Docs Ronhenry (Leander Beaton) control a soft :30.2 first quarter. As the outer flow formed late in the first circuit, Redmond Doucet elected to keep Modern Best along the pegs, and the pair closed off the pocket while Bet On Art (Ardon Mofford) advanced to press a :59.3 half.
Docs Ronhenry faced steady pressure through the second circuit, first from Bet On Art and then from Brookdale Bruiser (Andrew MacLean), who swung three-wide to take aim nearing three-quarters in 1:29.3. The beneficiary of the pressured pace ultimately was Modern Best, who angled out of the pocket with three-sixteenths to go and lifted to win by a half length in 1:59.1. Docs Ronhenry finished in a dead heat for second with Southwest Bliss (Keith Dicks), who scooted through up the pegs from last while the outer flow collapsed.
Stanley Harper trains 49-time winner Modern Best for Simon Poirier and Chad MacDonnell. The 12-year-old Modern Art mare has now won four of her nine races this season.
The featured win capped a driving hat trick for Doucet on the seven-race card.
