Blazin Britches Blows Them Away

Brian Brown has been high on pacing filly Blazin Britches for quite some time now, and in her big stage debut she did not disappoint.

One of six fillies entered in the $113,950 Shady Daisy for three-year-old pacing fillies, Blazin Britches was forwardly placed by driver David Miller along with second choice Idyllic Beach (Yannick Gingras). Blazin Britches landed on the lead but was quickly fronted by Idyllic Beach, who then yielded to Caviart Ally (Andrew McCarthy). That filly was on top just past the :27 opener with a short-lived lead and both Idyllic Beach and Blazin Britches weren't happy with those positions. Idyllic Beach pulled, as did Blazin Britches three-wide to clear as the half flashed up in :54.1. The third panel was reached in 1:22, with Blazin Britches still on the front. As the field hit the stretch, she widened her lead with every stride and hit the wire some five lengths the best in a lifetime best track record-equalling 1:48.4. Caviart Ally outmuscled Idyllic Beach for second.

Brian Brown trains Blazin Britches is now eight-for-nine as a sophomore. The Emerald Highlands Farm-owned homebred almost doubled her lifetime earnings with the win, now boasting more than $122,000.

“We thought she was a really nice filly right along,” said Brown. “We had to wait on her a couple times. Got started this year, we were ready to go to the Fan Hanover and she popped a gravel (in her foot). I give credit to her groom Kim Carruthers and the grooms at Bruce’s farm, they got her finally to pop it. That took two weeks and took us right out the Fan Hanover and the Lynch. We thought she was a good horse, but I can’t tell you I thought she was this good.”

The 1:48.4 clocking matched the track record for three-year-old fillies shared by Dancinwiththestarz (2010) and Agent Q (2017).
