There has been no touching Tobins Chester so far in his young career and the two-year-old son of Shanghai Phil will attempt to conquer the P.E.I. Colt Stakes on a mega-Sunday afternoon stakes card at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
The Prince County oval will host 18 dashes of stakes races on Sunday featuring the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts, two-year-old pacing fillies, two-year-old trotters and three-year-old trotters as well as a leg of the Island Ocean Trot Classic, presented by Burkie By The Bay Stable.
Race 14 is a $13,500 Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts with the undefeated Tobins Chester leaving from post two for trainer/driver Jason Hughes and owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I. The Shanghai Phil pacer has been a comfortable winner in all his three outings in Atlantic Sires Stakes, including a 1:57.4 lifetime best last week at Inverness Raceway in Nova Scotia. His top rivals are listed as Pauls Crown (Marc Campbell) and Check Your Chip (Myles Heffernan Sr.).
The "Backstretch Beat" says Tobins Chester will continue his winning streak: “Tobins Chester served notice in Inverness that he is one to beat. We will await the showdown with Jackies Boy, but since that isn’t coming today, we say the winning continues.”
Jackies Boy will look to extend his own win streak from post five in the other $13,500 two-year-old colt Gold division in race 18 for driver Heffernan and owner/trainer Myles Heffernan Jr. The Tobago Cays colt posted an 18-length romp in 1:57.4 his latest start in Inverness. Some top contenders he will face include Merigo Magic (Adam Merner) from post three and Good Omen (Paul Langille) with post two.
The two-year-old pacing fillies have $11,400 Gold divisions in races 11, 15 and 17.
Chip Of Evil is the morning line favourite in the $11,400 Gold split in race 11, named the Bernie & Ron MacArthur Memorial. Corey MacPherson will drive the Arthur Blue Chip filly from post three for owner Inarush Stable of Kensington, P.E.I. and trainer Eddy Doucette.
Race 15 has Miss Wicked as the top choice from the Joe Baxter stable for owner Blaine Thibeau of Kensington. MacPherson will be back aboard that McWicked filly after guiding her to a 1:58.2 qualifying victory in Summerside.
Saulsbrook Feisty rides a two-race win streak into post four as the favourite in the 17 Gold division with Marc Campbell getting the call for co-owner and trainer Carrie Saunders and co-owner Lois Saunders of Bible Hill, N.S.
Irish Ray (pictured above) has a win streak of his own to protect in a $12,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes three-year-old trotting colt division in race 10 as he will leave from post four while sporting a perfect 13-race win streak from as many career starts. Campbell trains and drives the Muscle Through It gelding for owner Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston, P.E.I. My Secret Ability (Kenny Arsenault) will try to end his streak from post two after winning his last two starts in identical 2:00.2 clockings at Red Shores Charlottetown.
