Trotting mare Global News collared race leader Spun From Magic at the wire to steal the Saturday night headline at Hiawatha Horse Park, winning the featured Preferred 3 Handicap Trot with a career-best mile.
Garrett Rooney drove the lone mare in the field of six to a 1:57 victory in the track's $5,500 top trot, catching Spun From Magic (Lorne House) after he had sprinted out to a big early lead and set panels of :26.4, :56.3 and 1:25.4. Global News swept up from third approaching the third quarter mark and defeated Spun From Magic in a photo finish, with favoured Jayport Hi Class (Greg Dustin) coming from last at the half to take third prize.
A winner in two of her last three Sarnia starts, Global News was sent postward as the 5-2 second choice and returned $7.10 to her backers at the betting windows.
Angie Carroll owns and trains the five-year-old Archangel-Going Global mare, who has won six of her 23 races this year. Global News shaved four-fifths of a second off her lifetime mark, winning for the 16th time in her six-figure career spanning 82 starts.
