Global News Beats The Boys In Hiawatha Preferred
Trotting mare Global News collared race leader Spun From Magic at the wire to steal the Saturday night headline at Hiawatha Horse Park, winning the featured Preferred 3 Handicap Trot with a career-best mile.
Garrett Rooney drove the lone mare in the field of six to a 1:57 victory in the track's $5,500 top trot, catching Spun From Magic (Lorne House) after he had sprinted out to a big early lead and set panels of :26.4, :56.3 and 1:25.4. Global News swept up from third approaching the third quarter mark and defeated Spun From Magic in a photo finish, with favoured Jayport Hi Class (Greg Dustin) coming from last at the half to take third prize.
A winner in two of her last three Sarnia starts, Global News was sent postward as the 5-2 second choice and returned $7.10 to her backers at the betting windows.
Angie Carroll owns and trains the five-year-old Archangel-Going Global mare, who has won six of her 23 races this year. Global News shaved four-fifths of a second off her lifetime mark, winning for the 16th time in her six-figure career spanning 82 starts.
