In what was his first charted mile since capturing the $772,000 Maple Leaf Trot on July 24, the Rod Hughes-trained and Randy Waples-driven San Pail took a tour of Mohawk Racetrack during the Tuesday morning qualifying
session.
After having lined up in Post 5, Waples sent the six-year-old San Pellegrino gelding to the top. The duo took a leisurely stroll through fractions of :31, 1:00.2 and 1:29.3, and cruised home in :28.1.
San Pail's win time was 1:57.4 and the margin of victory was two and a quarter lengths over Adam T.
The session kicked off with a quartet of juvenile dashes.
The Zeljko Bosnjak-trained and Mike Saftic-driven Kadabra filly Haphazard Gourmet kicked off the first of the freshman dashes in Race 1 with a three-length victory in 1:59.2. Finishing second in the mile for trainer driver Blair Burgess was For You Almostfree (Glidemaster--Pizza Dolce), the 2009 Lexington Sale topper who went for $270,000.
Change Agent was a wire-to-wire winner for driver Anthony MacDonald and trainer Carmen Auciello in Race 2. The Mach Three colt paced off to a four and a half-length win in 1:59.4.
With his trainer Blair Burgess at the lines, Windsongs Legacy colt Can Anyone Explain propelled from the garden spot in Race 3 and trotted off to a nine and a half-length win in 2:01.3.
American Ideal colt Achilles Blue Chip converted a front-end trip to a four and a quarter-length win in 1:56.1 during Race 4 for driver Randy Waples and trainer Gary Kingshott.
