Dave Kelly already had a sizable lead towards the driving title at The Track on 2, but a neck-and-neck race with Kelly Hoerdt for the training title had Kelly come out on top on the final day of the season Sunday (Aug. 30).
Kelly led Hoerdt on the driving side with 22 victories over Hoerdt’s 14 going into the final card, and expanded his lead with three victories on the card—each coming from his own barn. West Central Beach ($5.80) delivered as the favourite in the opener while Strange Dragon ($3.10) and Gin Twist ($4.10) gave Kelly back-to-back wins later in the day.
Phil Giesbrecht finished third in the driver standings with eight wins while Michael Hennessy slid into fourth with seven.
Hoerdt led Kelly on the training side with 16 wins to 15, but Kelly’s hat trick secured him the title by two wins. Richard Remillard finished third with six victories on the meet with Lance Ward and Gregory Manning tied for fourth with five wins.
