Nova Scotia newcomer Brother John rebuffed a challenge from sub-1:50 pacer Watermelonwine to win the featured $1,400 Winners Over Pace at Inverness Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
Watermelonwine challenged first over at the third quarter mark, but Brother John drew clear in the stretch to win in 1:58 flat. Watermelonwine settled for second-place, finishing just over a length behind, while favourite Future Million followed in third off a pocket trip.
Randy Getto trains and drives the five-year-old Stonebridge Regal gelding for his Nova Scotia co-owners -- Bradley Getto of New Waterford, Susan Macsween of River Ryan and Wayne Hardy of Sydney. Brother John, a 16-time career winner with $66,480 in purses earnings, was making just his second Inverness start for his new connections.
Brother John paid $6.10 to win as the 2-1 second choice.
