Big League posted the fastest mile ever recorded over Exhibition Park Raceway's half-mile oval when he romped to a 1:53.4 triumph in the $4,000 Milton Downey Memorial Pace featured on Friday's card in Saint John, N.B.
Driven by Dale Spence for Cornwall, P.E.I. owner and trainer Jonah Moase, Big League shaved four-fifths of a second off the track record that was co-held by Sandy Hanover and Woodmere Topcat.
Leaving from post four, the four-year-old Four Starzzz Shark gelding led the field of five through fractions of :27.1, :55.4, and 1:24.4 with a :29-second final frame en route a seven-length victory.
The race was Big League's first over Exhibition Park Raceway since his perfect freshman year racing from the Sean Dooley stable. He started his career qualifying at the Saint John oval and remains undefeated at the track having won his only other start there in October 2011 to go along with four qualifying wins.
Big League now boasts nine wins in 16 seasonal starts, improving his lifetime record to 22-6-2 in 46 races.
Big League paid $4.40 to win as the second choice in the wagering. All Turain and Gilles Barrieau finished second while Dance Hanover and Stephen Trites rounded out the top three finishers.
