The second leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Series on Tuesday (Aug. 3) featured a number of returning first leg competitors plus one new entrant making her debut for the top conditioner at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Silent Crossing (Doug McNair) crossed over to the lead in front of four Whenuwishuponastar rivals through a :27.4 opening quarter, but Sylvain Filion was not content to sit the pocket behind that 13-1 shot and looped 4-1 third choice One Last Bet to the lead as the field straightened down the backside. One Last Bet faced pressure soon after in the form of 4/5 favourite Flo (Trevor Henry).
As the field passed the half in :56.4, Flo continued to pressure the pacesetter through the next panel but started to feel the sting of that overland pressure through the 1:25.1 third quarter. A :29 closer was more than enough for One Last Bet to seal the deal and best Flo by more than a length in a maiden-breaking 1:54.1. Flo finished second despite suffering broken equipment before the start of the mile, and was deemed a complete pari-mutuel refund. Lyons Euphoria (James MacDonald) completed the top three.
A $20,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase of Brenda Selwyn Waxman of Dundas, Ont. and Tess Waxman of Ridgeville, Ont., One Last Bet (Betting Line - One Last Bono) was developed by Isaac Waxman and is now trained by Richard Moreau. She paid 6.10 to win.
The $50,000A Whenuwishuponastar Final is slated for Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Mohawk.
