Grand River Raceway hosted a Pink Patio Party in support of Harness The Hope on Friday, Aug. 28, with the evening's highlights including a women's driving challenge race during the card.
Anita Ouellette got A Sailors Delight home first in the fourth race for $8,000 claiming mare pacers, closing from seventh with a wide-sweeping move in the final turn to prevail in 1:59 by half a length over Rambaran Rose (Natasha Day) and Miss Sophia Rose (Maggie Jones). The eight-year-old homebred mare by Bay Of Sharks is owned by trainer Ruth Moore and James Hastie of Chatsworth, Ont. She paid $34.40 for the 16-1 upset.
The Grand River Agricultural Society presented a cheque for $8,500 to Harness The Hope, benefitting cancer support programs, awareness and research within Canada.
Harness The Hope was founded in 2005 with fundraising activities hosted at racetracks across the nation each year. Co-founder Kristy Dustin reported that Grand River has raised more than $100,000 for the organization over five years since it began hosting Harness The Hope events at the Elora, Ont. oval.
