A $24,000 condition trot headlined the Tuesday (Aug. 29) evening card at Woodbine Mohawk Park and Okeanos etched his name as the upset winner in the field of nine.
Bob McClure was in the bike for Francis Guillemette as he and Okeanos readied themselves in post two on the car. As the gate pulled away, Truffles Too (Sylvain Filion) moved quickly to grasp the early lead and set the pace for the mile. Through panels in :26.4 and :57 dictated by Truffles Too, Okeanos sat in fourth along the rail. McClure was the first to make a move against the leader and pulled his right line to send Okeanos forward. At the three-quarters in 1:25.1, the pair had taken over second from the outside. In the stretch, Okeanos sought a challenge against Truffles Too, but faced pressure from a charging Spartan General (Chris Christoforou). Okeanos prevailed at the wire to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:53.3. Spartan General took second with Truffles Too rounding out the top three.
Guillemette co-owns the seven-year-old E L Titan gelding with Eric Beausejour and Stephane Geoffroy. In 12 starts this season, Okeanos has had a record of 7-2-1 and $69,920 earned. With 14 career victories, the gelding sports $298,810 in lifetime earnings. He paid $10.40 to win.
