Miss Oromocto Wins Maritimer

Three-year-old pacing filly Miss Oromocto scored back-to-back wins on Saturday afternoon at Exhibition Park Raceway to take The Maritimer, sponsored by Standardbred Canada and the New Brunswick Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association.

Mark Haig drove the Driven To Win filly in both heats for trainer Melvin Land and co-owner Sharon Burchill of Oromocto, N.B.

In the $6,501 opening elimination heat, Miss Oromocto followed pacesetter Woodmere Dancenart, who had race favourite Jann Down challenging to her outside through fractions of :28.4, :59.4 and 1:31.1. However, Miss Oromocto kicked home in :28.3 to prevail over the front-end fillies in 2:00.

Sent postward as the favourite in the $8,668 final four races later, Miss Oromocto overcame an interference break at the start and went wire-to-wire, setting fractions of :31.1, 1:00.3 and 1:30.4 en route to the 1:59.4 score.

Casa Miasa and trainer/driver Bernard McCallum converted off a pocket trip and edged out favourite Party Rockin and pacesetter Invader M in 2:01.2 in the other elimination heat. The Driven To Win filly, owned by Gordon McCabe, finished fourth in the final. Party Rockin followed Miss Oromocto and finished second by one and a quarter lengths while Jann Down was third. Woodmere Dancenart earned the final paycheque in fifth.

Miss Oromocto now boasts six wins, two seconds and four third-place finishes in 13 sophomore starts. Her seasonal earnings climbed to $37,087.

Edward Harvey's five-year-old pacer American Terror won the afternoon's $2,500 Milton Downey Memorial in 1:59 by two lengths over Skippy, while Rocknroll Band finished third. Gilles Barrieau picked up the catch-drive and scored his 3,997th career victory.
