Returning home to Nova Scotia after competing in the Gold Cup & Saucer during Old Home Week on Prince Edward Island, P H Mike front-stepped his way to victory in Northside Downs’ featured $900 Winners Over Pace on Saturday.

The seven-year-old gelding left from Post 2 and quickly made the lead for trainer, driver and owner Myles Heffernan. After rolling past panels of :29.2, :57.1 and 1:27.3, P H Mike held off the pocket-sitter, Shifty Shadow (John Beaton) by three-quarters of a length for the 1:57.4 victory. Woodmere Westerner (Joseph Campbell) also finished on the board in third.

For P H Mike, son of Fit For Life-Lomalinda Hanover, the win was his 10th of the year in 25 outings and 33rd lifetime. With the lion’s share of the purse, P H Mike now sports a bankroll totaling $59,048.

One race earlier, a four-horse accident resulted in the judges declaring Race 12 a “no contest”. Julia Down, driven by Gerald Snow, fell at the three-eights mark causing the accident, which also saw Fast Lizzy, with Norm Fiander driving, fall. Driving Riverlea Ella, Shawn Lynk was thrown from the bike, as was Stewart Waterman, who was aboard Go Drop Go. Both horses remained on their feet.

Track announcer Shane Ryan told Trot Insider that Snow and Lynk were transported to hospital by ambulance. Both drivers were reported to be conscious when leaving the track approximately 30 minutes after the accident. Drivers Fiander and Waterman were able to walk away from the accident with what appeared to be minor injuries.

Ryan told Trot Insider that although a couple horses broke free, they were collared soon after and appeared to escape injury.
