It was a great finish in Monday’s $9,000 Open Pace at Century Downs, with the top spot going to Iwontdothatagain over race favourite Cool Cowboy.
Those two started from the outside of the gate, and they took drastically different approaches when the starting gate sped away. Cool Cowboy rocketed to the front, while Iwontdothatagain was hauled to the back of the bus by trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt.
Cool Cowboy parked to the quarter pole in :27.2 before clearing and proceeding to whack out middle panels of :57.1 and 1:25.2. Captain Hazardous applied first-over pressure to the leader late in the mile, with Iwontdothatagain tracking that foe’s cover. Captain Hazardous made a break past the three-quarter pole, and that left Iwontdothatagain to go after Cool Cowboy for the late stages of the mile. They came to the line together before Iwontdothatagain got up to win by one-quarter of a length over Cool Cowboy in 1:54.3. Metajka Road came on strong to finish third.
Hoerdt shares ownership on the six-year-old son of Stonebridge Regal-Island Nessie with Ed Keryliuk of Edmonton, AB. The gelding now owns an 11-4-1 record this season from 19 trips postward. The 17-time winner has banked over $110,000 to date.
