Dewinton Destroyer edged out Reservations Only in a 1:53.3 track record equalling performance in the $57,500 Alberta Sires Stakes Diamond Final for three-year-old pacing fillies at Alberta Downs on Sunday
afternoon.
Driven, trained and co-owned by Hall Of Fame horseman Keith Clark, the daughter of As Promised-Avacal Hope tied the track record for three-year-old filly pacers, set last season by the reigning Alberta Horse of the Year, River Lass.
Dewinton Destroyer's stablemate and fellow elimination winner, Minettas Nightstar (Bobby Clark), rolled the field past opening panels of :28 and :58 with Reservations Only (Ryan Grundy) following from the pocket and Dewinton Destroyer situated in third.
Minettas Nightstar opened up a three length lead on the field during the third interval with another elimination winner, Barona Josie (Bill Tainsh Jr.), well underway on the outside.
As the field hit the three-quarters mark in 1:25.2, Reservations Only pulled the pocket. Heading down the stretch, Dewinton Destroyer angled out into the three-path and the top trio went head-to-head.
Dewinton Destroyer ultimately prevailed by a neck over Reservations Only with Minettas Nightstar one and a half lengths back in third at the rail. It was over seven lengths back to fourth and fifth place finishers Apalamine (Kelly Horedt) and Barona Josie.
Dewinton Destroyer paid $2.20 to win as part of the 1-9 favoured entry. Doris McDougall of Cochrane, Alta. shares ownership of the bay filly with Clark.
Winless in four starts as a freshman, Dewinton Destroyer has gone on to earn seven wins and four seconds in 15 starts this year, pushing his career bankroll to $79,539.
