Fillies from the barn of trainer Daniel Martin swept the pair of $7,500 Coupe de l’Avenir divisions for two-year-old trotters on Thursday, Aug. 27 at Hippodrome 3R.
Dm Melodie proved unfazed by a first-quarter bobble in the first split and went on to a maiden victory in 2:04.4 in the first division. She entered the first turn in fourth, briefly galloped, then returned to the trot and used her momentum in catching the top three to launch a brushing move past the quarter in :29.4. Francis Picard put her on the lead at the 1:02.3 half, and after the first-over My Vym (Sylvain Lacaille) broke stride, Dm Melodie rolled unopposed to three-quarters in 1:33.3. Chapter For Speed (David Pilon) attacked from the pocket but could not reduce the deficit down the lane as Dm Melodie came home a 1-1/2-length winner. Hp Ness (Sylvain Fontaine) finished third.
Dm Melodie took her first win in her sixth start, bringing her earnings to $5,350. Martin trains the Wheeling N Dealin-Muscle Fern Jacky filly and co-owns her with Dominique Michel of Saint-Barnabe Nord, Que. and Jean Carignan of Becancour, Que. The win payout was $19.10.
Dm Kamille trotted off to a 5-1/2-length victory in the second division. Kinnder Top Dog (William Roy) had control through a :32.1 quarter before Dm Kamille emerged from third for Pascal Berube and took over past the half in 1:04.1. The prior pacesetter had no designs on the pocket and quickly shifted out to attack Dm Kamille but was unable to sustain the challenge past three-quarters in 1:34.3. With no other challenges forthcoming, Dm Kamille strolled to victory in 2:04.2. Kinnder Top Dog held second, followed by Miss Fastiny (Jessica Turenne).
Dm Kamille scored her first Coupe de l’Avenir win while bolstering her record to two-for-four. The daughter of Muscle Mass-Profound Wisdom has earned $6,400 for Groupe Dm Kamille of Saint-Barnabe Nord and Claude Hamel of Orford, Que. She returned $3.20.
Another Quebec-bred stakes competitor, Golddiamond, reached the winner’s circle on the card as the undefeated three-year-old gelding tightened ahead of his Trophée des Éleveurs final on Sept. 13. The son of Cattlewash-Tymal Sugarbabydoll swept wide to the lead early and cut :28.2, :58.2 and 1:27.3 fractions en route to his eighth victory without defeat in 1:57.3. Dark Flame (William Roy) was 1-1/2 lengths adrift in second, followed by Kinnder Colosse (Sylvain Fontain).
Golddiamond debuted this season for trainer-driver Stephane Brosseau and is two-for-two in the Trophée des Éleveurs. He has now earned $18,000 for Robert Bergeron and Chantal Trepanier of Laval, Que. He returned $2.80.
Rose Run Why Not dictated the fractions and trotted clear in a dominant victory in the $7,000 Preferred Handicap Trot.
The eight-year-old daughter of Uncle Peter-Loconotion marched to the front and rattled off the panels of :28.4, :58.4 and 1:28.4 with Prince of Sussex (Francis Picard) looming first-up. Rose Run Why Not distanced herself from the rest down the stretch to prevail by four lengths in 1:58.4. Prince Of Sussex was a game second, followed by Stella Alpha (Brosseau).
Rose Run Why Not recorded her third win from 13 attempts this year for trainer Carl Duguay, who partners in ownership with Investissement K F B of Sorel-Tracy, Que. The mare has won 26 times and earned $206,296 in 148 lifetime appearances. She paid $3.20 to win.
