
Malignity was crowned king of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series for horses and geldings on Tuesday, Aug. 26, delivering a powerful performance to capture the $16,000 Gold Final, presented by Kay's Wholesale, at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
The Paul Langille-trained Malicious-Lady Kelleigh Anne gelding lined up in Race 13 and got every call. He set fractions of :28.1, :57.2, and 1:25.4 before sealing the deal with a :28.4 closer to stop the clock in 1:54.3. Brookdale Johnny (David Dowling) was a game second, three-quarters of a length back, while Saulsbrook Ian (Adam Merner) took third.
Langille was in the bike behind Malignity ($3.60) for owners Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner, N.S., Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S., and Chantel Langille of Montague, P.E.I. The five-year-old gelding is now 29-for-55 lifetime with $201,412 in earnings.
The $10,400 Graduate Grassroots Final in Race 10 was another statement win for Jack Boswall ($2.50) who was iron-tough on the front end in a 3-1/2-length victory in 1:54.2. David Dowling drove the four-year-old Tobago Cays-Someshoresomewhere gelding for trainer Keith MacDonell and partners Mark MacDonell and Blenise Young. Allaboutthecash (Brady Sweet) was second, well clear of Howmac Exclusive (Corey MacPherson).
Woodmere Sinatra ($12.40) took advantage when favourite Freemans Legacy (Jaycob Sweet) suffered equipment issues in the final quarter to win the $6,000 Graduate Series Consolation in Race 7 by three-quarters of a length. Dowling was again the pilot, guiding the Rollwithitharry-Sinspirational gelding to victory in 1:57.2 for trainer Jenn Doyle and Jeff and Robert Skinner and and Daniel Hiltz. Freemans Legacy held second, and Justa Country Boy (Keith Legge) completed the triactor ticket.
On the overnight side of the card, Mantario ($4.90) prevailed in the $4,700 Winners Over Pace, lining up in Race 15, with trainer Dowling engineering a pocket trip behind Redland Misspretty (Langille). The veteran Sportswriter-Rocknroll Wishes gelding surged through the lane to win by a length in 1:55 for owner Jennifer Ritchie. Starship Glyde (Merner) was second and Redland Misspretty finished third.
Dowling scored four wins on the card, with Langille and Ken Murphy both notching three victories in the race bike. Trainer Greg MacInnis had a double on the 16-dash program.
