After a near miss in this month’s Sobey’s Gold Cup & Saucer, Wazzup Wazzup returned to the Charlottetown Driving Park and posted a gusty win in Monday’s $25,000 Founders Cup.
Wazzup Wazzup was parked at every post – and three-wide at the three-quarter pole for driver Marc Campbell – but that didn’t stop him from posting a win in the rich event. Up The Credit shot to the top from Post 3 and supplied first-half fractions of :27.3 and :56.2, but he lacked staying power when foes came at him from the backfield. D Gs Camme came first-over and cleared relatively easily before taking the field to the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4. Wazzup Wazzup rode the cover of that foe before engaging him in battle at the head of the lane. Wazzup Wazzup used a :28-second kicker to prevail by a half-length margin over D Gs Camme. All Turain was third.
Corey Johnson trains the six-year-old son of Life Sign-Paula Seelster for Rolling Hills Racing Stables of Uxbridge, Ontario. Sent off as the 3-5 favourite, Wazzup Wazzup won for the 22nd time in his career while pushing his lifetime earnings to $306,570 in the process.
The final dash of the 12-race card was the $5,000 Builders Cup, and it was none other than Jody Jamieson clicking with Modern Xhibit in 1:55.1. The five-year-old son of Modern Art-Armbro Teacher brushed to the lead in the second quarter before coming under heavy pressure from Narragansett in the middle stages of the mile. Modern Xhibit eventually put away Narragansett en route to winning by 2-1/2 lengths. Narragansett was second, with Blissfull Bro taking home the show dough.
Jonah Moase of Cornwall, PE owns and trains the winner of close to $170,000. The victory was the pacer’s third of the season and the 14th of his career.
