The betting public was almost ‘all in’ on Lorrie Please in Tuesday’s Fillies & Mares Open Pace, and the mare didn’t disappoint her backers.
Things got interesting in the late going, but when the dust settled Lorrie Please prevailed by a head in the $19,000 tilt.
George Dennis hustled Lorrie Please to the lead from the rail, and she front-stepped through panels of :27.3, :56.4 and 1:25.3 before cranking out a :27.4 final quarter en route to staving off late pressure from eventual runner-up Monochromatic. Third prize in the eight-horse affair went to Melissas Fancy.
Doug Lewis trains the six-year-old daughter of Western Ideal-National Gallery for partners Allen Kaplan, Ira Kaplan and David Sheib. It was the ninth victory of the season in 28 tries for the 31-time winner. The lion’s share of the loot lifted her lifetime earnings to $411,240.
The victory was one of four on the card for driver George Dennis.
