Mexican Maid posted a dominant six length victory in the $3,180 Kindergarten Stake for Manitoba-sired two-year-olds on Saturday at Killarney.
The non-wagering race featured just three starters with Mexican Maid sitting second for most of the mile before drawing off down the stretch to win in 2:06.3 for the husband and wife driver-trainer team of Darryl and Sherri Mason. Alcars Blue Bird and Marc Fillion finished second while pacesetter Chill Fight and Kirk Rogers faded to third.
The Masons bred the Armbro Baylor-Tequila Lullaby filly, who has now won half of her six career starts for owner Don Anness of Emo, Ont.
In other action, Meadowlarks Legacy won the $1,700 MHHI Claiming Series event for $2,500 claimers in a 1-1/4 mile track record clocking of 2:36.1. The seven-year-old gelding rallied wide around the dueling leaders, Everybody Dance and Mackenzie Seelster, at the third quarter mark and drew off to a two and a half length victory. Fillion drove the winner for trainer and owner Kevin Hildebrandt of Roseau River, MB. Cheyenne Dusk and Garett Isman finished second and Everybody Dance was third for Dean Rey.
Meadowlarks Legacy, who was a runner-up to Mackenzie Seelster in the 1-1/2 mile first leg last weekend at Wawanesa, earned his first win of the season in seven starts.
