With BC's standardbred racing industry currently in scramble mode to retain race dates for the foreseeable months, Fraser Downs horseman Dave Jungquist isn't pulling any punches regarding what he believes the motives of
track operator Great Canadian Gaming Corp. are.
In an article by Surrey Now, Jungquist has stated that GCGC is trying to get rid of standardbred racing at Fraser Downs to make room for thoroughbred racing to take centre stage at the track.
"It's dead certain that's what they're trying to do, in my opinion," Jungquist was quoted as saying in the article.

Dave, I hate to say it but I think you may be right! The Casino based at Fraser Downs Standardbred track is a much better business than the Hastings Park Thoroughbred track. Surely the powers to be recognise that Standardbred Racing in BC is big business and an economic driver for Cloverdale, Langley, Surrey and the greater Fraser Valley. The study by IER (2008/09) demonstrates that BC needs both the Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing industry. Racing will NOT survive on thoroughbreds alone in the Province. For BC to lose horse racing would be an economic disaster. Livelihoods and families destroyed, jobs lost, industries and businesses closed. Someone should be listening to the horsemen at Fraser Downs.
