Flash Cube won the $10,500 Preferred Handicap at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday (Aug. 21) with Samuel Fillion on board, who accumulated five driving wins on the 10-race card.
Scratched down to a field of five, Flash Cube held second choice going to the gate in the feature pace. His stablemate, The Light Speed claimed bettor's choice.
Springbridge Jim (R. Shepherd) was the first to leave the gate and clear to the front. Day Delight (Jimmy Gagnon) followed in second and The Light Speed (Guy Gagnon) pulled back to the rail. At the :26.3 first quarter, Flash Cube (Samuel Fillion) held position in fourth and Silverado (Ryan Guy) in fifth. The field remained unchanged at the :54.2 half. Then, The Light Speed and Guy Gagnon made their move, pulling first up against Springbridge Jim. Flash Cube followed right on Gagnon's helmet to a 1:22.1 third quarter. The Light Speed cleared to the front and Flash Cube continued in the outer flow, challenging his stablemate down the stretch.
The Light Speed was bested by a nose at the wire by Flash Cube in 1:51.1. Silverado finished third by half a length. Flash Cube returned $11.40 for the win.
Guy Gagnon trains Flash Cube, a four-year-old gelding by Sportswriter, out of the Camluck mare Fancy A Dream, for owner Yvan Mondoux. In 11 starts in 2022, Flash Cube has a record of 4-2-1 with $23,511 accumulated. His career earnings total $114,386 with six wins. The victory is a new lifetime mark.
Samuel Fillion also recorded wins on Twin B Laker, Speak Of War, Cortez The Killer and Chantee. Fillion has 266 wins recorded with nearly $1.5 million in career earnings.
Mandy Archer trained three winners on the card, all three of which were teamed up with Fillion: Twin B Laker, Speak Of War and Cortez The Killer.
