After having a two-race winning streak derailed in last week’s $9,000 Open Pace at Century Downs, Iwontdothatagain returned to the oval and used a different tactical approach to land himself back into victory lane.
Iwontdothatagain, who was asked to rally from out of the clouds en route to finishing second last week, got away fourth in Monday’s main event for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt. He remained fourth through the first half – a half in which Cool Cowboy and Sabine Pass took turns on the lead through fractions of :27.3 and :56.
Sabine Pass was still in charge at the three-quarter pole in 1:23.2, but Iwontdothatagain was charging hard from first over. Iwontdothatagain took over command at the head of the lane and used a :28.2 closing panel to win in a career-best clocking of 1:51.4 over Appellate, who was 4-3/4 lengths in arrears. Sabine Pass faded to finish third.
Sent off as the 3-2 favourite, the seven-year-old son of Stonebridge Regal-Island Nessie improved this year’s record to 6-5-3 from 16 starts for Hoerdt and partner Ed Keryliuk. The 29-time winner has banked close to $210,000 to date.
