As the two-year-old pacing colts hit the halfway mark in their season, Twomickeytrip is making the move from the Gold to the Grassroots Series and hoping to hit the board when the provincial program stops at his hometown oval on Saturday, Aug. 24.
Twomickeytrip and trainer-driver Rick Fife will line up behind Post 1 on the Kawartha Downs starting gate, battling an eighth race field full of Grassroots regulars. Among the colts who have already accumulated points toward a berth in the post season are seventh and eighth ranked Mach Stockn Barrel and Major Starlight, who will start from Posts 2 and 9, respectively.
Ennismore resident Fife shares ownership of Twomickeytrip with breeder Grace George of Cavan, and the partners started the half-brother to $425,424 winner Watermelonwine in the June 28 Gold Series season opener at Mohawk Racetrack. The Mach Three colt finished a respectable third, but missed the second event due to sickness, leaving him out of the July 19 Mid-Summer Challenge. Two more starts in open competition at Mohawk saw Twomickeytrip fail to hit the board so Fife and George opted for the move into the Grassroots Series.
Unlike Twomickeytrip, Rather Swell has already garnered 75 points toward a post season berth, tallying one win and one second in his two Grassroots appearances. The Bob McIntosh trainee is currently tied for fifth in the division point standings, from which the top 10 will advance to the Sept. 21 Grassroots Championship.
McIntosh, who makes his home in Windsor, shares ownership of Rather Swell with Dave Boyle of Bowmanville. The Western Maverick son will make his bid for a second Grassroots win from Post 1 in the ninth race, taking on a field laden with newcomers to the provincial circuit.
The two-year-old pacing colts will look to impress Kawartha Downs’ fans in Races 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 on Saturday’s program, which gets under way at 7 p.m.
